A few thoughts on helping your child with asthma
- Help your child learn to use their inhaler properly. Proper inhaler technique is an important part of asthma control. Learn more about inhalers in this video and this tutorial on proper inhaler technique. One important reason young asthmatics have trouble with their asthma is not their inhalers properly.
- Be proactive. Try to avoid triggers and adjust your child's medications ahead of exposure if avoiding triggers is absolutely impossible. As your child gets older transitioning some of this responsibility to them is important as well.
- Avoid outdoor exercise during extremes in weather and when when air pollution levels are high (bad ozone days). Limit vigorous exercise when you are suffering from a cold or upper respiratory infection.
Common sense in developing good health habits will do a lot for your child's asthma. Maintain a healthy diet, get 8 hours of sleep each night, and develop a "no smoking" policy. Make sure you hydrate well before sports, other vigorous activities, and when outdoors during the summer months.
