Buteyko Breathing Exercises & Asthma

From Pat Bass, About.com GuideApril 8, 2011

Buteyko breathing exercises were developed by Ukrainian physician Konstantin P. Buteyko in the 1960s. Dr. Buteyko believed that asthmatics chronically hyperventilate, or breathe too quickly, resulting in chronically low levels of carbon dioxide. In asthmatic patients, he believed, the low carbon dioxide levels lead to inflammation and bronchoconstriction.

Buteyko breathing involves controlling your breathing by decreasing both the volume of each breath and the number of breaths you take per minute. Through a series of exercises you retrain how you breathe. Additionally, Buteyko breathing places an importance on nasal breathing and relaxation techniques.

Thank you, Dr Bass, for letting asthmatics know about this wonderful technique. The Buteyko technique is effective for any age and asthma severity, but to ensure maximum safety and long term health improvement, consult your doctor and a qualified Buteyko Educator. The Buteyko Breathing Educators Association is a non profit professional organization created to raise awareness of the Buteyko Method. If you need to find a qualified Buteyko Educator /Instructor in the US, Canada or Europe, look up at http://www.buteykoeducators.org/

Correct information regarding Buteyko patent and trademark is available from here:
http://www.buteykoclinic.com/america.html#taught

It is a sad day for Buteyko when one group tries to claim monopoly rights despite the fact that the Buteyko Method has been delivered throughout the USA for nearly twenty years. Read the letter from Dr Vladimir Buteyko.

Buteyko changed my health and life, as it has for almost all the qualified Buteyko Educators I know. After 30 years of asthma, it has been gone for over 10 years. No attacks. No medications. Buteyko has been taught in Canada and the United States for 20 years by a dedicated group. Now there is an official non-profit association, the Buteyko Breathing Educators Association, dedicated to excellent training of new educators, standards of conduct and teaching, continuing education and research. Go to buteykoeducators.org for more information. Exclusivity of patents or trademarks do not exist. We are intent on making Buteyko accessible to everyone who needs it. Return to healthy breathing and see what happens!

Thank you for helping to spread the word about this totally natural way to help asthma sufferers, giving them back control of their health.

The Buteyko method has been listed in the UK asthma guidelines since 2008.

The Buteyko course is already covered by medical insurance in Australia and Ireland.

(And for me, learning the technique allowed me to control crippling, frequent migraines that I had had for 20 years)

I find this method to continue to be truly amazing. It is a great method for relaxation, putting my panic attacks to rest forever. It is the final piece of the puzzle medically speaking as doctors overlook rate and volume of breathing as having any effect on the human body.
