Definition: Allergic conjunctivitis is the medical term for what is more commonly known as eye allergies. A strict definition of allergic conjunctivitis would be an inflammation of the thin membranes surrounding your eye, which are the conjunctivae.
The conjunctivae line your eyelids and the exposed part of your eyeball. They are part of your immune system and can become inflamed when exposed to one of your allergic triggers.
Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis is the most common and occurs in sensitive people in the presence of tree, grass, or weed pollen or outdoor mold spores.
Perennial allergic conjunctivitis is less common, but persists year round because it is related to exposure to always-present triggers such as dust mites, animal dander, insect allergens and indoor mold spores.
