Definition: GERD is short for the medical term gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle does not close properly, is weak, or relaxes when it shouldn't, and stomach contents back up (reflux) into the esophagus.

When stomach contents reflux into the esophagus, it is extremely irritating and can cause symptoms such as heartburn and difficulty swallowing. GERD is common in people with asthma and can worsen asthma symptoms too.

Also Known As: acid reflux, heartburn
