Definition: Corticosteroids is the medical term for a medicine more commonly known as steroids. Steroids can be taken in oral, injectable, or inhaled form to treat many different types of inflammatory diseases. In people with asthma, inhaled steroids are the controller medicine of choice.

Common brands of inhaled steroids include Pulmicort, Flovent, and Qvar. A common oral corticosteroid sometimes used for asthma treatment is prednisone.

Corticosteroids are nothing like anabolic steroids, the harmful substances that athletes sometimes use to enhance performance. Rather, they are very similar to natural substances found in the human body.
