Question: Is There Anything Else I Need to Know About a Peak Flow Meter?

Answer: Using a peak flow meter is just part of your asthma management program. It should not be used as a substitute for professional health care. Do not start using a peak flow meter without your doctor's OK. Do follow your doctor's exact instructions for when and how to use the meter.

Remember: Effective asthma care happens when there is a partnership between you and your doctor.

Be sure you have an asthma action plan to use in conjunction with the peak flow meter readings you take. Remember, too, that you are looking for changes in the pattern of your peak flow readings over time. To see such patterns, you need to use your peak flow meter on a regular basis, not just once in a while.
