Question: How Do I Use My Peak Flow Meter?

Answer: It is important to use a peak flow meter correctly if you want to get accurate peak flow readings. Luckily, it is a simple device to learn how to use. Here is a list of the steps:

  1. Gather your meter, a pencil or pen, and paper or a diary
  2. Move the slider on the peak flow meter to zero or the lowest point on the scale
  3. Stand up straight and breathe in deeply
  4. Wrap your lips tightly around the mouthpiece of the peak flow meter
  5. Breathe out as fast and forcefully as you can
  6. Make sure your tongue doesn't block the mouthpiece as you blow out
  7. Write down the number where the slider is after your exhale
  8. Repeat the steps above two more times
  9. Compare the 3 peak flow readings and write the highest one in your peak flow diary
  10. Compare this number to your personal best PEF rate and consult your asthma action plan to see if you need to take action
