It's quite possible it will help. In fact, the Buteyko breathing method is the only complementary and alternative medicine treatment recognized by the British Guideline on the Management of Asthma 2008. The method was given a class "B" recommendation meaning there is evidence it may be helpful for some patients with asthma. The guidelines state the “Buteyko breathing technique may be considered to help patients to control the symptoms of asthma.”
By slowing breathing down to control hyperventilation, you can, in theory, decrease inflammation and bronchoconstriction. Research studies have demonstrated the following benefits of the Buteyko breathing method:
- Fewer asthma-related symptoms
- Decreased rescue inhaler use
- Decreased use of inhaled steroids
- Improved quality of life
Bottom Line: The Buteyko breathing method may help you decrease medication use and reduce your asthma symptoms, but you should still seek medical care for managing your asthma.
