Definition:

Metered dose inhalers (MDIs) are portable, hand-held devices that use a pressurized liquid gas, or propellant, to deliver doses of your asthma medication. MDIs reliably deliver a specific amount of medication to you.

A MDI consists of 2 parts:

  • A plastic case with a mouthpiece
  • A pressurized canister that contains the active medication

When you press the MDI, a small mist of medicine is released that you can inhale directly or through a spacer. MDIs can be used for both quick relief and controller medications.
