Question: Are There Other Asthma Risk Factors I Should Know About?

Answer: The early years in children’s lives can make a big impact on whether they’ll develop asthma. Chronic exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke and many respiratory infections during the first few months or years of life can greatly dispose a child to developing asthma. So, if you have a child and you smoke, it would greatly benefit your child’s health if you can quit smoking .

Living in a large urban area, where there is increased exposure to pollutants in the environment, can also increase a person’s risk for asthma. And children who had a low birth weight also appear to be at greater risk.
