Flu & Staying Healthy: Workplace Tips

Thursday September 17, 2009

We all know that some people come to work when they shouldn't. But what can you do to stay healthy in your workplace? The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recommends these  tips to keep yourself and your co-workers healthy during this flu season:

  1. Stay home if you have a flu like illness. If you have fever and a cough or sore throat stay home until better. The CDC recommends you stay home until you are free of fever for 24 hours and not using anti fever medications like Tylenol. The CDC states you need to stay home even if you are treated with flu medications such as Tamiflu.

  2. Frequently wash your hands. Use soap and warm water or at least an alcohol based hand cleaner if soap and water are not readily available.

  3. Do not touch your nose, mouth or eyes.

  4. Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer.

  5. Disinfect common surfaces such as phones, shared computers, desks, and other common work spaces. Try not to use other co-workers spaces if possible.

  6. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Make sure you get enough rest, exercise and eat an appropriate diet.

Your advice about alcohol-based hand sanitizer appears to be slightly out of date, according to this article I read recently. What say you?
