Jovante Woods, son of former  Cincinnati Bengals player Elbert "Ickey" Woods, died following an asthma attack. According to a press release from Princeton City Schools, Jovante was an important member of their football team and an excellent student with a 3.8 grade point average.

"Jovante and his family are, and always will be, a big part of the Princeton family," said Princeton Schools Superintendent Dr. Gary Pack. "This news is heartbreaking, his future was so incredibly bright. We'll be there for his family and our students and staff at every step. Monday is going to be a tough first day of school."

This event continually reminds us how serious asthma can be. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, every day in the United States:

  • 40,000 people miss school or work due to asthma.
  • 30,000 people have an asthma attack.
  • 5,000 people visit the emergency room due to asthma.
  • 1,000 people are admitted to the hospital due to asthma.
  • 11 people die from asthma.
