Definition: A screen that filters out particles in the air by forcing them through microscopic pores.

HEPA filters are used in vacuum cleaners and air purifiers. They can help limit the amount of dust mites, pollen spores and other allergens in your environment, making them useful in helping you achieve greater asthma control.

HEPA filters have different ratings for efficiency, which are generally posted on the filter itself. They do need to be replaced regularly, more often if you have large quantities of allergens in your home.

Also Known As: high-efficiency particulate air filter
