Question: What Is a Peak Flow Meter?

Answer: A peak flow meter is a portable, hand-held device that helps you check how well your asthma is controlled by measuring the air you can push out of your lungs. This is called the peak expiratory flow rate, or PEF for short. A peak flow meter is easy for most people to learn to use.

Peak flow meters come in two different range types. The low-range kind is used for young children, who have smaller lungs and airways. Average range peak flow meters are used for older children, teens and adults.

There are also different styles and brands of peak flow meters that you can buy. Your doctor can help you choose the one that is right for you.
